VOTER REGISTRATION INFORMATION
Primary - Tuesday, May 6, 2008 / ELECTION - Tuesday, November 4, 2008
| 1. |
What is the deadline for voter registration?
4:30 PM - April 7, 2008 (This is also the first day to vote absentee.)
Everyone can register to vote, as long as they will be eighteen (18) by Election Day, November 4, 2008.
Voter registration will then open again May 20 to October 6, 2008, for the General Election in November.
Voter registration forms and instructions for submitting them are available on the Secretary of State's website at www.sos.IN.gov/elections
Voters can check registration status and find the location of polling places at www.IndianaVoters.com

| 2. |
What are the most common reasons that people have to re-register?
Because they have transferred from one address to another. (In the past, we used to purge the records. However, since the motor voter has been used, purges are not required, so once you register you are always registered.)
|
| 3. |
When a person moves, how long must they live at that address in order to vote in that Precinct? They must live in their precinct 30 days prior to the Primary. (Not prior to the end of the registration period-prior to the Primary.)
|
| 4. |
Do I need a Photo I.D. to vote?
See information below about Photo I.D.
|
| 5. |
If we are taking the forms to the County Clerk's Office, is it mandatory that we (or anyone doing the registration) know the Precinct and Ward? No, it is not; however, it helps the Clerk's Office if they can at least note somewhat of a direction of their residence to help the County Clerk determine the Precinct. There is a little box down at the bottom (No. 12) if the people are not sure.

PHOTO I.D.
A voter must provide government-issued photo ID before casting a ballot. The ID must fit the following criteria:
- Your ID must display your photo.
- Your name on the ID must conform with your voter registration record. Conform does NOT mean identical. Below are examples of names that would conform to "Robert John Crew":
Robert John Crew
Robert J. Crew
Robert Crew
R. John Crew

Bob J. Crew

- Your ID must contain an expiration date and either still be current or have expired sometime after the date of the last General Election (November 2, 2004). This also includes Military ID's listing "INDEF" under expiration date.
- Your ID must be issued by the State of Indiana or the U.S. government.
- In most cases, an Indiana driver's license, Indiana photo ID card, Military ID or U.S. passport is sufficient.
If you are unable or unwilling to present ID meeting these requirements, you may cast a provisional ballot. If you cast a provisional ballot, you have until noon ten (10) days after the Election to follow up with the County Election Board and either provide the necessary documentation or affirm one of the law's exemptions applies to you.
Exemptions do exist for the indigent, those with a religious objection to being photographed, and individuals living in state-licensed facilities where the precinct's polling place is also located.
If you do not already have a valid photo ID, you can obtain an Indiana photo ID card free of charge from any Bureau of Motor Vehicles branch that issues drivers' licenses and ID cards. For more information, contact the BMV at (317) 233-6000 or visit the website http://www.photoid.in.gov
