"You See Ashes, We Smell Answers"

|
Bailey is a black Labrador born on December 11, 2001. Bailey and Michael Wilson, Fire Marshal for the Warsaw Fire Department, became partners in 2003 when Fire Marshal Wilson trained with Bailey as an accelerant (arson) detection canine team for the ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives). Bailey and Fire Marshal Wilson are valuable tools for fire scene investigations in Kosciusko County as well as throughout the State of Indiana. On an average, Bailey works 60 scenes per year.
Bailey’s main job is to detect if accelerants were used to start a fire – meaning ignitable liquids used to commit the crime of arson. Dogs have about 220 million receptors in their noses to detect scent, compared to humans who are thought to have 50 million receptors. ATF-trained dogs can detect a mere three drops of fuel that may be buried four feet deep in fire debris. This creates a valuable tool for fire scene investigators when investigating structure fires.
Bailey is currently one of 77 certified ATF accelerant detection canines in the United States, and is assigned in Indiana. Bailey is also part of the ATF National Response Team designated to assist federal, state and local law enforcement/fire service personnel in on-site investigations. Bailey completed his yearly recertification with the ATF and is certified with the North American Police Work Dog Association (NAPWDA), of which he is a member.
