Animals

Restrictions on Pets   

Warsaw residents are permitted to own a maximum of three dogs and they must be confined to the owner's property.  To report neglected animals, call the Warsaw Police Department at 574-372-9511.  Corporal Steven R. Brown is the City's Animal Control Officer.

Corporal Brown takes animals that he picks up within the city to the AWL Rescue & Adoption Center.  Residents should check there first for lost pets.

Excerpt of City Ordinance

SECTION 5-1.  Public Nuisance.  Any animal which:

1. Interferes with passersby or passing vehicles;
2. Attacks another animal;
3. Attacks a person;
4. Trespasses on school property;
5. Trespasses on business establishments;
6. Is repeatedly at large or unrestrained;
7. Damages private or public property;
8. Excessively barks, whines, howls, or makes other
        excessive sounds common to its species.

SECTION 5-36.  Public Nuisance Animals


No person shall own or harbor a public nuisance as defined in this chapter. The Animal Control Officer may take steps immediately to correct the situation either through the issuance of a citation or impounding the animal if an owner or agent cannot be found at the time of disturbance.  Violation of Section 5-36: Public Nuisance Animals could result in a fine of:  First Offense $25;  Second or Subsequent Violation $50.

Leash Requirements

Within the city limits, all dogs must be kept under the attendant's control.   Stray dogs should be reported to either the Warsaw Police Department at 574-372-9515 or the Animal Welfare League Rescue and Adoption Center at 574-267-3008.

Licensing

All dogs and cats within the City of Warsaw are required to have a rabies shot each year.  Tags are issued at that time verifying the vaccination.  It is required that dogs have this shot by three months of age.  Dogs are also required to wear a county tax tag obtained at the Kosciusko County Assessor's Office.  For the safety of your animal, tags should be worn on a collar at all times.  Contact the Kosciusko County Assessor's Office at 574-372-2310 for more information on the county tax tag.


Feeding of Wildlife

It is prohibited to feed wildlife such as ducks, geese, and other game and animals on land owned by the City of Warsaw.
